Vitalik Buterin Proposes Ethereum Transaction Gas Cap to Enhance Security and zkVM Compatibility

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has formally introduced EIP-7983, a proposal to implement a strict 16.77 million gas limit per transaction. This initiative aims to fortify network security by preventing denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and mitigating unpredictable network behavior.

The gas cap specifically targets enhanced compatibility with zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs), ensuring smoother execution environments for these systems. By establishing a manageable gas ceiling, the proposal facilitates more reliable computational processes within zkVM frameworks.

Notably, the transaction-level cap operates independently of Ethereum’s block gas limit, which remains adjustable by miners and validators. This design preserves flexibility for block processing while accommodating advanced DeFi applications and complex contract deployments.

The proposal aligns with Buterin’s broader vision for a streamlined Ethereum base protocol, drawing inspiration from Bitcoin’s minimalist architecture to improve network efficiency and security. EIP-7983 represents a strategic balance between innovation and stability, safeguarding against system abuse while fostering zkVM integration and smart contract development.
