Vitalik Buterin Proposes 16.77M Gas Cap in EIP-7983 to Enhance Ethereum Scalability

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has formally proposed EIP-7983, recommending a 16.77 million gas cap per block to improve network scalability and mitigate systemic risks.

The proposal specifically targets denial-of-service (DoS) vulnerabilities and network congestion by limiting gas consumption, aiming to maintain low transaction fees while optimizing Layer 1 efficiency. This initiative aligns with broader infrastructure enhancement efforts amid record-breaking network activity, with weekly interactions exceeding 15.4 million.

Community reactions remain divided. Supporters highlight potential throughput improvements, while critics express concern over possible operational constraints for complex transactions. Buterin contextualized the proposal by referencing Ethereum’s historical block gas limit adjustments, stressing the necessity to balance scalability with decentralization principles.

The Ethereum founder emphasized that EIP-7983 is designed to preserve fundamental attributes including censorship resistance while supporting sustainable ecosystem growth. This strategic adjustment continues ongoing optimization endeavors as demand for Ethereum blockchain services intensifies.
