Investment platform eToro has launched tokenized versions of U.S. stocks as ERC-20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, enabling 24-hour weekday trading for European investors. The move leverages blockchain technology to broaden access to traditional equities through continuous trading windows previously unavailable on conventional exchanges.
eToro CEO Yoni Assia emphasized blockchain’s transformative potential for democratizing asset management, stating the technology helps bridge accessibility gaps in traditional financial systems and accelerates market innovation.
The initiative is supported by established regulatory frameworks including the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regime and the U.S. proposed Generating Necessary Opportunities Toward Upgrading Status (GENIUS) Act, lending legal compliance and operational legitimacy to tokenized securities structures.
Tokenization is projected to inject liquidity into decentralized finance ecosystems while boosting total value locked (TVL) metrics. Fractional ownership capabilities, extended trading schedules beyond traditional market hours, and seamless transferability represent key advantages, with all tokens maintaining direct links to their underlying securities.
