Ethereum Foundation Commits $2.25M to Defend Tornado Cash Developers

The Ethereum Foundation has allocated $2.25 million to support the legal defense of Tornado Cash developers Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev. The funding, comprising $1 million for Storm and $1.25 million for Pertsev, aims to cover their legal expenses amidst ongoing money laundering allegations.

This financial commitment underscores the Foundation’s stance on defending developer rights and emphasizing the critical role of privacy-centric protocols within Ethereum’s decentralized ecosystem. Tornado Cash, a privacy-focused protocol enabling anonymous transactions, is currently under significant legal scrutiny, raising broader questions about the regulation of privacy tools in blockchain technology.

The Ethereum Foundation explicitly stated its position, declaring, ‘Privacy is normal, and writing code is not a crime.’ This move represents a strong advocacy for privacy rights within the realm of digital finance.

Market analysts anticipate that the persistent legal uncertainties surrounding Tornado Cash and privacy tools could lead to increased volatility for Ethereum and related privacy-focused tokens.
