Geth Team Declines Ethereum Foundation’s $5M Independence Offer, Opts to Remain

The Ethereum Foundation proposed a $5 million offer for the Geth development team to operate independently, but the team declined and chose to remain under the foundation’s centralized structure. Principal developer Péter Szilágyi revealed the proposal, which aimed to separate Geth from the foundation’s direct oversight.

This decision highlights ongoing tensions around client diversity and centralized development within Ethereum’s ecosystem. The foundation previously allocated $5 million in unconditional funding to Parity Technologies to support alternative client development and enhance network resilience.

Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak reassured the community that Geth remains critical to Ethereum’s infrastructure and security. The situation reflects the foundation’s strategic balancing act between promoting multiple client implementations and maintaining the robustness of its flagship execution client software.
