Crypto Community Raises Over $140K via Solana Meme Coin for Balaji Family Legal Battle

Supporters of late OpenAI researcher Suchir Balaji have launched the Justice for Suchir (SUCHIR) token on Solana-based platform Bags.FM, raising over $140,000 for his family’s legal expenses.

Balaji was found deceased in November 2024, with authorities ruling the death a suicide — a conclusion contested by his family. The family subsequently filed a lawsuit against the City of San Francisco and the San Francisco Police Department.

The cryptocurrency fundraiser, which amassed funds during a January 2025 campaign, highlights the community’s mobilization using decentralized tools to support the family’s pursuit of legal recourse. Proceeds directly aid the ongoing lawsuit challenging the official account of Balaji’s death.

This initiative demonstrates the crypto ecosystem’s capacity to leverage blockchain-based assets for real-world causes, providing financial backing for justice-seeking efforts.
