China Security Agency Warns of Crypto Biometric Data Risks, Cites Overseas Projects

China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) has issued a stark warning regarding biometric data collection initiatives associated with cryptocurrency projects, identifying them as a major threat to personal privacy and national security.

The agency specifically highlighted an unnamed overseas digital asset venture, widely interpreted to be the World project championed by Sam Altman. This project, which reportedly offers its WLD token in exchange for iris scans, operates extensively across 160 countries but excludes China.

The MSS emphasized the unique dangers posed by biometric leaks, particularly for irreversible data like iris recognition, which it stated are prone to malicious exploitation. It warned that such sensitive information represents a critical security vulnerability if accessed by unauthorized parties.

Contrasting approaches were noted, including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s proposal advocating for a pluralistic digital identity system designed to enhance privacy. Buterin has previously criticized identity models that are overly rigid, trackable, or based on ‘proof of wealth’, arguing they disproportionately benefit the wealthy.

In light of the identified risks, the MSS strongly advised individuals against submitting biometric data to these ventures, stressing the potential for severe consequences to both personal privacy and national security.
