Intesa Sanpaolo has become Italy’s first bank to make a Bitcoin investment after buying more than $1 million worth of BTC during a period of growing institutional interest.

The trial was part of an initiative set up by the European Central Bank to identify how blockchains can facilitate central bank money settlement.

Global lenders and asset managers are increasingly exploring blockchain tech to issue and transfer traditional financial instruments, also known as tokenization of real-world assets.

The initiative aims to help Italian banks, asset managers and financial institutions, including the $1 trillion banking group Intesa Sanpaolo, experiment with decentralized finance and security tokens.
